In a world where it’s all too easy to throw things away, the Tunbridge Wells Repair Café is proving that sometimes all an item needs is a little care and attention. Run entirely by volunteers, this monthly not-for-profit community event at Trinity Theatre offers free repair services for household and garden items – helping to reduce waste, save money, and breathe new life into much-loved belongings. Although a free service, donations are always gratefully received and passed on to good causes in the local area.
What Can You Bring?
The Repair Café’s talented team of fixers are skilled in a wide variety of areas, meaning there’s a good chance they’ll be able to help with whatever you bring along. Examples include:
- Computers & IT – laptops, tablets, phones, printers and software issues.
- Mechanical – clocks, record players, music boxes, toys, umbrellas and more.
- Electrical – everyday items like kettles, toasters, lamps, coffee machines and hedge trimmers (microwaves excluded).
- Clothing & Textiles – from jumpers and shirts to rucksacks, handbags and gloves.
- Jewellery – repairs for necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
- Knives & Tools – sharpening services for kitchen knives, scissors, axes and garden shears.
- Miscellaneous – toys, ceramics, ornaments, small furniture, lampshades and beyond.
Making a Difference
Since its launch, the Repair Café has assessed 3,894 items, successfully repairing 59% of them – keeping countless belongings out of landfill. Along the way, they’ve also donated an impressive £4,800 to local charities, showing their commitment to the wider community.
The Repair Café’s ethos is not just about fixing things, but also about connection and conversation. Visitors enjoy a friendly, social atmosphere where learning and sharing skills is as valuable as the repairs themselves.
One of our own team, Lisa, recently took her cherished Links of London sweetie bracelet to be mended. She was delighted when the volunteers fixed it – a treasured item she wears every day, given a second lease of life.
