Primark to Open at Royal Victoria Place – Creating Over 100 Jobs

Excitement is building as Primark prepares to open its highly anticipated Royal Tunbridge Wells store at Royal Victoria Place this November. The new 31,000 sq. ft. flagship will span two floors, offering the full Primark experience — from fashion and kidswear to home, beauty and lifestyle collections.

Recruitment is already underway for over 100 local roles and the store’s arrival represents a significant boost for Royal Victoria Place, drawing more shoppers into the town and enhancing the centre’s retail mix ahead of the Christmas season. 

Whirligig Toys Returns to Mount Pleasant Road

Another much-loved local name has made a welcome return. After a four-month closure caused by a fire in May, Whirligig Toys on Mount Pleasant Road has officially reopened following extensive repairs and refurbishment.

The blaze, which began on 29 May due to a dropped cigarette, caused smoke damage to stock and the shop frontage. Fortunately, no one was injured, and thanks to swift action by fire crews, the incident was contained. However, owner Peter Allinson faced an extensive restoration process, including £28,000 worth of repairs and complete stock replacement.

Now, as of Saturday 4 October, Whirligig Toys has reopened its doors with a refreshed look and a brand-new range of creative toys and games. Known as one of the UK’s largest independent toy retailers, Whirligig specialises in “things to make and do” — hands-on, imaginative toys that encourage children to explore, build, and create.

The Tunbridge Wells branch, located near the Royal Victoria Place in the historic opera house building, continues to champion high-quality, eco-conscious products and small independent toy makers. Shoppers can expect a warm welcome — and a store brimming with inventive gifts ready for Christmas.

Five New Retailers Join the Royal Victoria Place and Ely Court Line-Up

Royal Victoria Place and the surrounding town centre are also expanding their offering with a combination of new national and independent retailers.

New cafés open in Royal Victoria Place

Found on the upper mall, Jamaica Blue brings a taste of the Caribbean to Tunbridge Wells. Inspired by the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, one of the world’s finest coffee-growing regions. Expect expertly brewed coffee, freshly made meals, and a relaxed, modern atmosphere that celebrates quality and flavour.

Also joining Royal Victoria Place on the lower mall is Kochi Café, offering light, fluffy pancakes inspired by the French soufflé style and refined in Japan. Signature drinks include Strawberry Matcha, Iced Velvet Chocolate, and Pistachio Coffee Latte — a perfect pairing with Kochi’s delicately crafted pancakes.

The neighbouring Ely Court area continues to attract an eclectic mix of independent operators, further enriching the town’s retail diversity. The latest additions include Frook Eats, The Denture Centre, and Zerdo – Gourmet Shop.

• Frook Eats specialises in freshly prepared, frozen meals to stock up your freezer, made daily in their working kitchen. The brand’s mission is simple — wholesome, flavourful food ready to heat and enjoy. 
• The Denture Centre is a family-run clinic offering examinations, consultations and modern denture treatments using advanced technology to create natural, functional results.
• Zerdo – Gourmet Shop brings a “Taste of Europe” to Tunbridge Wells, offering an impressive selection of artisan cheeses, Spanish jamón, Italian cured meats, French wines, and premium deli products. Expect hand-carved charcuterie, fine olive oils, fresh sandwiches, and speciality coffees.
